Damir Pilic is a journalist for Slobodna Dalmacija newspaper in Split, covering social issues.

His reporting assignments have taken him to Cuba, China, Vietnam, Russia and the Middle East. He holds a Master's degree in psychology and has published several books about the social pathology of Croatian society, including two novels.

For the fellowship programme, he will tell the stories of ex-professors of Marxism from eastern Europe and examine an apparent revival of Marxist values highlighted by the electoral success of Greece's Syriza party.

From Karl Marx to Sister Teresa

There is no doubt that Karl Marx is one of the most influential philosophers of all time. Just one illustration: in a BBC poll in 1999, he was voted “the greatest thinker of the millennium”.

In my personal life, Karl Marx has also played an important role. Without him, I probably would not have been born.
