Topic 2015: Values

The theme for this year’s fellowship is Values. Let the topic inspire a new idea for a story. Or think of a story you’ve wanted to do and see if you can link it to the topic.

The most important thing is to produce a strong story proposal, even if it is only loosely connected to the theme.

You could consider the topic in a financial context. You might explore whether an organisation or individual valued something appropriately, for example when a government sold off a public company or asset.

You might investigate whether taxpayers or shareholders get good value for money from a particular service or organisation.

Values can be moral as well as financial. You could examine the ethical values of an organisation, a community or an individual. Have their values changed or endured? Are the values they claim to hold reflected in their behaviour? In each case, what are the consequences?

You might look at how a particular group or issue is treated by society. What does this say about the values of that society?

You could report on rising or falling property values, mathematical values in algorithms used by companies and governments, clashes between value systems... or you might come up with something entirely different. The topic is deliberately broad to garner a broad range of proposals.

Whatever your idea, remember that you must explore it not just in your home country. The fellowship offers the chance to examine how different countries in the region and in the European Union approach a particular issue. Do some research to see how the experiences of other countries fit into your story.

Your story should have an investigative or analytical element. It should also be topical, reflecting a current issue, and it should tell the reader something new — something that has not been widely reported. If you want to tackle an issue that has already had a lot of coverage, think of a new angle, an element that has been neglected in media reports so far.

In your proposal, make sure you answer the question: “so what?” — why should readers be interested in this story?

The rest is up to you. Good luck!
