2010 Fellow Scoops Albanian Reporting Award

Fellowship alumni Ervin Qafmolla has received the 2010 Vangjush Gambeta award for best economic report in written media.

Qafmolla’s article, A Story of Too Many Zeros, examined the Albanian government’s attempt to secure large international loans it cannot realistically repay.

The report focused on a statement by Albania’s prime minister, Sali Berisha, in which he confirmed his government had acquired loans of 3.2bn euros from overseas investors and organisations.

Apart from conventional reporting, such as use of quotes, facts and data, the judges commended his writing style, noting in particular Qafmolla’s use of satire.

This is the second year that the Vangjush Gambeta economics and business reporting awards - organised by the Union of Albanian Journalists - have been held.

Two other prizes were awarded for best TV and radio economics reporting. Klodian Tomorri won the top prize for best TV report and Amarildo Topi for best radio package.

Vangjush Gambeta, after whom the prize is named, was a key figure in the establishment of fair and unbiased journalism in Albania. His career ended abruptly in 1975, when he was persecuted by the communist regime and faced deportation along with other leading Albanian intellectuals.

Ervin Qafmolla (link)  took part in the 2010 fellowship programme and his article, Cult of Virginity Fades Slowly in Albania (link), examined modern challenges to traditional Albanian moral codes.
